Abundance - Money - Affluence
Affluence is a term that you might think translates to riches or money.  Getting rich is something that many today pursue, sadly often at the expense of everything that matters.

The three primary definitions of affluence are:

  • Abundance of money, property, and other material goods; riches; wealth
  • An abundant supply, as of thoughts or words; profusion
  • A flowing to or toward; afflux

The Universe is About Abundance

Quite simply, one of the synonyms of affluence is abundance.  That’s what is meant when referring to the term affluence in this site.

Abundance of love, sustenance, connections and relationships, and yes…money.

The universe is often completely misrepresented today.  Many live in a universe of scarcity.  The simple fact is, the universe is a place of abundance.  The universe abhors a vacuum and will fill any void encountered quickly and completely.  You can see this in nature every day if you change your perspective (aspect) ever so slightly.

An Example of Balancing the Void

Take for example the microcosm of a neighborhood.  In the Pacific Northwest, there was a huge demand for workers in a specific area, and not just farm hands, but skilled workers like scientists and engineers.

The local population could not fill that demand, so a void (a scarcity) was realized.  It wasn’t too long and workers began to flock to the area because the promise of a job without traffic, without high living costs, and with a very high payout due to the demand was an allure too rich not to consider.

So a new void was created, that void took the form of housing issues…there were not enough places for these people flocking to the region to live.  But there was a lot of farmland.

That farmland was purchased at a premium price to the farmer, who consequently retained his water rights (among others), because the city lacked the impetus to pursue and manage that responsibility at the time.  That land was then re-zoned by the city as mostly residential, but wisely the city held some of it back for commercial.

The housing void, consequently, began to fill very quickly.  Affordable as well as premium housing was developed, meanwhile more and more farmland was gobbled up.

Now there came the void of nearby (to the new community) commercial services.  The commercial services began to develop at an amazing rate, to fill that void.

Next came the void of not enough infrastructure, which consequently resulted in roads being rebuilt, communication networks being put in place, plumbing infrastructure exploding.

Affluence is about balanceThis also resulted in the city going back to the farmer that the land was purchased from, and paying a premium to own the irrigation and other rights that the farmer had wisely held back and that the city was now prepared to handle.

Now a void of another type of laborer was realized in the service industry, which was filled.  The food the farmer had been producing while relatively small was still a void that had been displaced by the new community and it’s supporting businesses and infrastructure, so other farmers picked up the baton as well as services bringing in imports from other regions.

I think you probably get the point by now.  It is the nature of the universe to fill any void that manifests.  You may not agree with, or like the way the universe handles the filling of those voids, but that is irrelevant.

What IS relevant and what you need to understand is that this “golden calf” called money that everyone is so onerously pursuing is an illusion often persisted by greedy charlatans on and off the Internet acting as the tool providers of the 21st century.

By tool providers I’m referring to the gold rush era of old.  You see, many people prospected for gold.  Some struck it rich, but ironically the people that did the best were those that provided the tools to the prospectors!

Is the American Dream Dead?

Many have told me that the “American dream” is dead.  That rags to riches stories are so much fluff designed to provide false hope to those that desperately want their “freedom” and to achieve affluence.

abundanceRabbitBut that’s not true, I’ve seen the opposite too many times.  The problem is, that too many people don’t know what it is that they are pursuing.  So they chase snipes, illusions, promises that ultimately get broken, spirits devastated, and a new level of communal as well as individual cynicism is reached.

Affluence might have something to do with money in your world.  Or it might be that you want an abundance of other things…friends, travel, sunny days, whatever…

Step One:  Define what Affluence Means to You

Likely it will mean that you need a certain amount of financial income to attain what freedom means to you.  If that’s true, then know what it is!  Know what you need!  Figure it out, it’s important!

Maybe you have a void, maybe you don’t, but you’ll never know until you figure out what your deficit is, to know when you’ve reached an abundance of something.

That’s why it’s so important to not focus just on one thing, like money.  It is imperative that you achieve a balance, because nature abhors a vacuum!

Let me spell it out; let’s say that you achieve some financial goal beyond your wildest dreams!  But you have no one to share your success with, because your wife left you, your kids don’t have time for you, your friends got tired of waiting for you to deem them relevant again, and you can’t do all the fun things you used to do anymore like ski, or ride bikes (for example) because you’re overweight and out of shape.

Dreary isn’t it?  You focused so long to achieve your goals, only to find that they don’t matter.  Nobody cares…or worse, the wrong people care.

Affluence means a lot more than money, it is but one tool in the arsenal of A’s that you need to achieve freedom because…

…the journey is the point, the goal…it’s everything…until you breathe your last…freedom is a journey!

I never thought about Affluence means to me and looking at it from this type of perspective. If you were to ask me what Affluence means to me, I would actually have no idea how to answer it. Now I am going to have to think about this and come up with that answer or answers, and once I do, I will definitely post an update with what my definition of Affluence is. Thanks for sharing this information.

Life is worth much more than material possessions. Yes – they are important but they are certainly not the most important.

The simple things in life are what are most important to me. I cherish family, the ability to live every day with all my senses intact, and overall freedom.

I know that some people may take these simple blessings for granted and focus mostly on gathering all the material possession that they can, but when in reality there is great abundance for everyone on earth. Due to greed, many suffer each day.

Your writing reminds me of the great King Solomon’s; he said within Ecclesiastes that everything is meaningless and a chasing after the wind…what does it gain a man to possess the world but lose his soul? Utterly meaningless.

Thank you again for another brilliant article!

Great article thank you. Affluence… I find it very interesting. I totally agree with you, one of the keywords I got from this article is balance… and finding your WHY. Why do you want something? Just setting a financial number is going to say very little, but if you have a clear plan of what you will do with that money, now you are on a better path.

If your why is strong enough you will eventually get there… I know I will 🙂

BEAUTIFULLY put Vicky! I couldn’t have said it better myself 🙂

What you said made a lot of sense. But, think about this, what if you added a little content? I mean, I don’t want to tell you how to run your blog, but what if you added something to maybe get peoples atnention? Just like a video or a picture or two to get people excited about what you’ve got to say. In my opinion, it would make your blog come to life a little bit.

Thanks Jetsyn! I’m always working on content, though at times the world gets in the way. Thanks for the advice!

The nail was hit on the head! Starting with a definite “why” and beginning with the end in mind is one of the biggest keys to success. Too many times people spend more time thinking about what they’re going to wear than designing their lives!

It’s the truth my friend, it seems that today it’s better to look happy than be happy.

Have you ever thought about publishing an eBook or guest authoring on other blogs? I have a blog based on the same subjects you discuss and would love to have you share some of your insight. I know my readers would value your work. If you’re even remotely interested, feel free to send me an email.

Thanks Fred I have been considering doing some writing in other places. Let me know if you want to share some insights and maybe you can lend your insight to my audience as well.

Affluence to me is not only having wealth but the ability to influence decisions, events and actions because of your wealth and position in society. Wealth on the other hand to me is freedom, which is why I love this post. The freedom to live how you want to live in a society where constraints are placed on those without means.

    Thanks for the enlightening post!

    1. Jack Post author

Yes! One thing I’ve noticed though is that the constraints that we think are there, quite often are there only because we allow them to be.

One thing my dad told me that has served me well is, “know the system”. Note, he didn’t advise me to “game” the system or use the system for ill intent. He told me to KNOW the system.

By knowing the system one can find ways of exploiting the systems within moral confines. Often times, the checks and balances are only there for those not clever enough to push the scale in the direction one wants, simply by virtue of superior knowledge.

What an interesting page. I guess I’ve never thought about affluence in general or how it relates to my life. I like what you said about whether or not the American Dream is actually still alive and well. So many people pursue something because we have to have a reason to get up each day. I think a lot of the problem is that we don’t know where we’re truly headed. I think we get caught up in the idea of something and push ourselves, but where? How do you keep driving a car if you don’t know where you’re going? We all need dreams and goals to push us but we clearer visions overall. Maybe we do have a personal idea of what affluence is for ourselves but we’re unsure of how to tackle it.

This is a very thought provoking page : )

    1. Jack Post author

Thank you Allison! Exactly, without dreams and without goals we’re simply existing. We start to look to others to help us get through one more day of our dreary existence. We start to escape into the various crutches that exist today (facebook, drugs, alcohol, etc…). Knowing where you are going is important, it drives us. But even if you aren’t completely sure of the destination, just start moving and doing. Find SOMETHING, typically that ultimately leads us to where we were supposed to be all along 😉
